Project SELF-Booster (Eureka Eurostars-2) co-funded by EU Horizon 2020 and CDTI

Valencia, Poland, 16th June 2021.

Zeleros, the European company based in Spain leading the development of a scalable hyperloop, and Magneto, the polish company specialized in the manufacturing of electric motors, have announced the beginning of a joint European Commission-funded project: the SELF-Booster

This project, approved under the Eureka Eurostars programme between Spain and Poland, aims at accelerating the path to market of SELF, the Sustainable Electromagnetic Freight-forwarding system. This innovative system consists of a fully-automated platform that is based on Zeleros’ novel switched-reluctance linear electric motor technology developed jointly with the Spanish research center CIEMAT. The platform will enable the transportation of containers inside ports and airports and between ports and hinterlands with zero GHG emissions and high reliability.

SELF is aligned with the European Green Deal, more specifically with the priority called “Accelerating the shift to sustainable and smart mobility” where automated and connected multimodal freight transport are a priority, especially in cities. The system will solve some of the most pressing challenges of the logistics industry such as the increasing port activity, traffic congestion in hinterlands and nearby areas, the pollution and CO2 emissions and the lack of cost effectiveness.

The pilot project will consist of a 60-meter test track for high-speed testing, demonstrating the superior performance to move containers in intra-port and port-to-hinterland operations with zero direct emissions, autonomously and at reduced costs.

Daniel Orient, Zeleros’ Co-founder and Chief Technology Officer, declares  “After validation of our technologies at laboratory scale, we are excited about this next step, demonstrating our system in a real environment. Hyperloop technologies can have application in many other fields, which pose a promising future for hyperloop and port freight transport”.

Jakub Rygal, Magneto’s Head of Magnetic Core department, states “We combine years of experience in the fabrication of complex electromagnetic assemblies, and we are excited to cooperate with Zeleros in this innovative project.”

Additionally, the SELF-Booster will become the base technology for Zeleros’ hyperloop electromagnetic launcher, used to accelerate the vehicle up to cruise speeds.

This project will also accelerate the road to greener ports and a more sustainable intercity mobility.
