Sustainable Electric Freight-forwarder (SELF)

ZELEROS and MAGNETO start EU-project to build a zero-emission freight forwarder for ports and hyperloop

  • The SELF-Booster project has been approved by Eurostars, a programme of the European Union and EUREKA member countries Spain and Poland with nearly 1M€.
  • The pilot consists of a 60-meter test-track in Spain for dynamic demonstrations.
  • The commercial solution will decarbonize and automate the transport of cargo in ports and airports as well as passengers and goods in hyperloop systems.

Zeleros, the European company based in Spain leading the development of a scalable hyperloop, and Magneto, the polish company specialized in the manufacturing of electric motors, have announced the beginning of a joint project co-financed by the European Union’s Horizon 2020, the Spanish Centre for the Development of Industrial Technology (CDTI) and the Polish National Centre for Research and Development (NCBR): the SELF-Booster.

This SELF-Booster project, approved under the trans-European Eureka Eurostars programme, aims at accelerating the path to market of SELF, the Sustainable ELectromagnetic Freight-forwarding system invented by Zeleros. This innovative system consists of a fully-automated system of guided electric vehicles that have the capabilities to move containers in intra-port and port-to-hinterland operations with zero GHG emissions and high reliability. The system is based on a novel switched-reluctance linear electric motor technology developed jointly with the Spanish research center CIEMAT.

The pilot project will consist of a 60-meter track that will enable demonstration at dynamic conditions, showcasing the superior capabilities and performance of the system.

SELF project Zeleros & Magneto

SELF is aligned with the European Green Deal objectives, more specifically with the priority of “Accelerating the shift to sustainable and smart mobility” where automated and connected multimodal freight transport are a priority, especially in cities. The system will solve some of the most pressing challenges of the logistics industry such as the increasing port activity, traffic congestion in hinterlands and nearby areas, the pollution and CO2 emissions and the lack of cost effectiveness. Additionally, the SELF-Booster will become the base technology for Zeleros’ hyperloop electromagnetic launcher, used to accelerate hyperloop vehicles up to cruise speeds.

In summary, the SELF-Booster project will accelerate the road towards greener and smarter ports and airports and a more sustainable intercity mobility, paving the way to build a low-carbon, climate-resilient future.
